HAGTNA, GUAM (Marianas Business Journal, Sept. 24, 2012) The Bank of the Federated States of Micronesia (BFSM) and Visa have launched the FSM's first domestic Visa Debit card and the bank's first ATMs. BFSM Visa Debit card offers bank patrons access to the financial mainstream and a safer way to carry money and manage their personal finances without having to visit a bank to access funds. The new BFSM debit cards can be used in Micronesia and anywhere Visa is accepted. Tourists to the FSM will also be able to access their funds at the bank's first four ATMs - one at each of the bank's branches in Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap. Iain Jaimieson, Visa's country manager for the Philippines and Guam, traveled to Pohnpei for the launch.
"It's the first time anyone from Visa has visited Micronesia," he said the prior to his trip to the FSM. The company believes that while the amount of spending is small, its business in the FSM will increase with the introduction of the debit cards and the spread of the technology to use them. "Everyone knows that Micronesia is one of the best dive sites in the world," he said. He said the company notes card activity by travelers from the U.S., Australia and Europe at hotels where the cards are accepted. "It's all happening at the dive sites and things like that. I want to see how we can expand that network. ... It's an exploratory visit to see what's going on."
